Tell Ambassador Susan Rice: Don’t be AWOL on Civilian Protection in Darfur!

Darfuri civilians are under increasing attack – Human Rights Watch recently reported that in May 2010 alone there were approximately 600 deaths, thousands displaced and increased rapes. Homes and water pumps have been destroyed as Government forces and allied militias have illegally targeted civilian populations.

This week, Ambassador Rice expressed concern at the increasingly volatile situation in Darfur. But the pressures and consequences for violations of key benchmarks, like civilian protection, promised by the Obama administration’s Sudan policy are still AWOL. With the UN Security Council meeting this week to renew UNAMID’s mandate, now is the time for the US to lead with ACTION, not just words!

Please take one or more of these actions:

Human Rights Watch reported that innocent civilians in Darfur are being targeted by Government forces and allied militia. Obama administration is AWOL on implementing its Sudan policy, failing to apply pressures and consequences based on benchmarks. Ambassador, please apply U.S. leverage and move the UN to strengthen civilian protection in Darfur. We need action! http://bit.ly/b4LjtK
